4-Strand or 8-Strand Braid for Baitcasting

4-Strand or 8-Strand Braid for Baitcasting?

For baitcasting, I prefer 4-strand braided line. It is generally cheaper than 8-strand models, twists less, and the individual strands are significantly stronger at the same line rating. This makes it easier to handle and more predictable during the fight, less hassle and more time spent fishing instead of untangling knots.

The often-cited greater casting distance of 8-strand lines hasn't really shown up in my experience. Far more important than the number of strands is the quality of the line. A well-made 4-strand braid runs smoothly through the guides, spools neatly onto the reel, and gives a good feel when casting and fighting fish.

One example from my own experience is the Sufix X4 Braid Hi-Vis. I've had very good results with this line.

In short, a high-quality 4-strand line provides relaxed, precise fishing without the need for unnecessarily expensive 8-strand braid.
