Freshwater Fishing Around Bergen - Three Lakes Worth Visiting

So far, this blog has focused almost entirely on fishing in the fjords. This time, I want to recommend three lakes around Bergen for anyone who enjoys targeting brown trout with spinning or fly tackle. All three are easy to reach, fishing is free, and each lake has its own character.

1. Munkebotn and Langevatnet

Above Sandviken, you'll find Munkebotn and Langevatnet just a short walk apart. They are easy to combine into a single fishing trip, so if one lake isn't producing, you can simply move on to the other.

Both lakes hold healthy populations of brown trout. Small inline spinners have worked best for me over the years. Depending on the season, small spoons and crankbaits can also be effective, but I never head there without a few spinners in my tackle box.

On sunny days, the walking paths around the lakes are popular with hikers and locals. Don't be surprised if someone stops to ask whether you've caught anything. It's all part of the experience.

I also recommend bringing a landing net with a long handle. Some parts of the shoreline are steep, and landing a fish without one can be difficult.

2. Liavatnet

Liavatnet in Laksevåg is a much larger lake and one of my favorite freshwater spots around Bergen. It holds plenty of brown trout, and one side of the lake has a long stretch of flat, easily accessible shoreline. That makes it a great place for both spin fishing and fly fishing.

Here's a tip for getting the most out of your trip. Take the bus to Bjørndalsbakken, walk back to the lake, and fish your way along the shoreline. When you reach the other end, catch the bus again from Vadmyra. This way, you don't have to retrace your steps and can cover almost the entire fishable shoreline.

3. Langavatnet

Langavatnet, located behind the IKEA store in Åsane, is a lake that many anglers seem to overlook. Parts of the shoreline are lined with houses, making access a little more challenging, but the roadside offers several good places to reach the water. In some areas, you'll have to push your way through bushes to find a good fishing spot.

The banks can be difficult, with trees, dense vegetation and steep edges in several places. A long-handled landing net is a real advantage here as well.

I wouldn't recommend this lake for fly fishing. Spin fishing is much more practical under these conditions. Langavatnet is home to plenty of brown trout, and some of them grow to an impressive size. There are also regular reports of Arctic char being caught here.
